Types of Plants for Gardening
Plants for gardening vary from small to large plants; water plants to bushes and so on. Now why do they vary? It is because of the different climatic conditions and type of soil. Some conditions might not always be ideal to sustain all kinds of plant life. In our gardens we may nurture different species of plants, by taking some special care; but surely not all since the climate at a particular place may not sustain every species of plant.
The garden plants may be categorized according to the specific needs they serve. For example, there are Annuals & Perennials. There are easy care and low maintenance perennial plants. Perennial flowers too fall under this category. Then there are seasonal flowers too. Some flowering plants suit well for dry areas.
- Roses may be grown in shade gardens too. Hybrid roses are also very pleasing.
- Vines and climbers are also an important variety of garden plants. But unless they can be provided with trees or structures to climb upon, there is no scope to utilize them in our gardens.
- Ornamental grasses do not gift us fruits or flowers but their presence in our gardens add beauty.
- The bulb plants add color to the garden and in some case bars intruding animals like deer.
- Vegetables and flowers take the most important place in a garden. Flowers are valued for their beauty no doubt. But some flowers are even edible and delicious.
- Then there are shrubs which too have some special uses as they bring in colors and provide structures often.
- Let us take the case of bulb plants that are good for home gardening. In this category come gladiolus, irises, lilies, dahlias etc. that ar very popular.
- Among the aquatic plants are water lily and lotus. Aquatic plants may deserve special mention since we are generally less acquainted with the nurturing needs of those. They too need proper soil conditions. But what is unique is that, they grow in water filled environment. Water depth, water temperature and what to with plants in winter are some of the important considerations.
- Water lilies, lotus etc. prefer most heavy clay loam soils similar to what we provide in a general garden setting. These types of soils are normally well balanced nutritionally and they support good growth.
We have chosen from variety of plants for our gardens. If we cannot accommodate a few of our choice for want of space or some other problems we should not be disheartened. If we go ahead with our limited resources a day may come when with the expertise gained and fund accumulated we may welcome those too!
