Sowing a plant ushers in the birth of a new plant life. If we are oblivious of the precautions to be taken while gardening, our dreams of remaining associated with a wonderful and rewarding profession or pastime like gardening might get shattered altogether.
First precaution to be taken is in the matter of right choice and good selection of seeds. We must be careful that we recognize correctly what sort of soil it is and at what depth or temperature the seed is being planted. Appropriate season must be chosen for sowing a particular plant.
Proper conditions of light, moisture, temperature and air are very important. But it cannot be expected that we can get the most ideal conditions every time and in every case. We must learn how to adjust the things most and what precautions in the matter we can take so as to minimize the lack of any congenial conditions. For example some seeds need pre-treatment like chipping, soaking, pre-chilling etc. These are not must though in those cases germination time may go up unless these precautions are taken.
Methods of planting play a very important role attaining success. Preparation of the soil culminates in making ready the seed-bed that is how we name the surface that welcomes seeds. It should be reasonably moist and sufficiently rich. But that is not all. Unless the seed is properly planted all these efforts become meaningless.
The rows for sowing seeds should be carefully marked and properly distanced.
The seed must be supplied with moisture without which it cannot germinate. Further, it must have soil through which the air can to some extent penetrate.
After you complete sowing the seed you should see to it that the ground does not crust or bake on top, which will often happen if a scorching sun immediately follows a morning rain.
Precautions must also be taken against soil diseases. “Damping off” denotes the condition caused by various soil diseases and faced by germinating seeds. Good fungicides are available for keeping these problems under control. However, a few precautions like use of a sterile germinating or growing medium and keeping hands clean while handling various seeds and tools etc. may prevent damping off diseases.
Also the seeds should be clean and free from any mold or fungus and young plants should not be exposed to direct sunlight, heavy rain and wind,.
If just a few precautions at the time of sowing a plant can hold high the chances for its bright life why should we not stick to those?
