Cucumbers grow in heat and space. They demand an average temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees C). If you’re growing cucumbers somewhere colder, they need plenty of direct sun. Cucumbers are a ‘vine’ plant or climbers and most varieties will climb. Thus need space to spread. You can grow cucumbers on a trellis which can provide more fruit per plant than ground cover varieties. This article gives few tips to grow this versatile vegetable in your garden.
Here are Few Steps to Grow Cucumber in Your Garden:
- It is best to plant cucumbers at the end of spring or even the beginning of summer. If temperatures still get very cold at night, you may need to use some sort of frost protection to make sure your plants survive.
- Select a place that has good amount of sunshine and warmth. The soil should be of reasonable pH of range 6.0 to 7.0. The soil should support good drainage.
- Cucumbers grow well in compost heap. Prepare the ground well and remove all weeds. You may also add some organic fertilizers and root supplements to help protect your plants against disease or garden pests. You should take care to wait until after the first flowers have appeared before you fertilize. Take care that you dont over fertilize the soil.
- Sow the seeds in biodegradable seedling pots that will ensure roots are not damaged when you plant out the seedlings.
- Leave a gap of around 40cm to 50cm between seedlings. If growing in containers, you can group sow 3 seeds in each hole. This will increase chances of germination success. Seeds should be sowed 2.5cm deep. If you are planting more than one row then rows should be spaced at around 90cm.
- Ensure good space as cucumbers can rapidly grow and reach around 6 feet. If space is limited train the plant against a wall, stake or trellis. They may also spread over the ground if you have the space.
- While harvesting see that cucumbers get suitable size. This is normally around 50-60 days after planting. See that the skin is dark green in colour and if they turn yellow it means they are over ripe and their quality of flavour will decline.
