Growing spinach in your garden is an easy task. All that it needs is cool weather, good seedlings, light, fertile and moisture-retentive soil of pH ranging 6.0 to 7.0. Because of its short season (spring into early summer), spinach can be grown in any location of your garden and then removed to make room for warm season crops.
Here are few steps to grow spinach in your garden:
- Once you get proper place and soil, dig in plenty of well-cured manure to ensure the right soil conditions and to provide the nitrogen necessary for good leaf production.
- Now, sow spinach seeds directly into the garden as soon as the ground can be worked. Spinach seeds can be planted at a depth of approximately one half inch below the soil surface. Water the seedbed well after planting.
- Plant seeds two inches apart in wide rows. For a continuous harvest, sow every two weeks until daytime temperatures start to average 75 degrees F. Continue watering daily until the seedlings emerge then water at regular intervals to keep the growing spinach from wilting.
- Keep the soil moist, and feed plants manure tea or fish emulsion every 10 days until they are 6 inches tall.
- Mulch established plants to conserve moisture and deter weeds, and cover the area with floating row covers to discourage insects.
- As the growing spinach begins to mature its leaves, you can start harvesting by pinching the base of the leaf to remove it from the plant. Do not remove too many leaves at any one time. Leave at least 25% of the growing spinach leaves to fuel the plant’s production.
