Growing mushrooms in your garden or back yard is a great way to ensure a supply of good quality mushrooms. It is also a pleasure to see mushrooms growing.
It used to be very difficult to grow mushrooms. But with the coming of mushroom kits, it has become very simple.
There are two types of mushrooms – ground mushrooms and log mushrooms. As the names suggest, ground mushrooms grow on the ground and log mushrooms grow on logs.
Here’s how to grow mushrooms
Ground mushrooms
Things needed
- Mushroom growing kit
- Rotting compost or horse manure
- A bucket or a similar container
Mushroom growing kits are easily available as mail orders, in stores or on the net.
- Pour the compost in the bucket or container.
- Spread the sterilized grain available in the kit on the surface of the compost. Spread it thickly.
- Cover the container with an aluminum foil.
- Keep the container in a dark place, like the garage.
- Add water to the container to keep it moist.
- The kit will give you two to three flushes of mushrooms. Each flush will give you about 1 kg of mushrooms.
- You may get an additional flush if you tip the contents on a compost heap.
Log mushrooms
- Find a hardwood log atleast one foot in diameter. If you have recently felled a tree, the tree stump will make an excellent habitat for mushrooms.
- Buy wooden dowels at a store, through mail order or on the net. These wooden dowels contain mushroom spores.
- Drill holes in the log at intervals of 5-6 inches. There should be about 50 holes in a log.
- Put the spawns in them. Put the log in the right conditions.
- You will get your mushrooms in 9-12 months. You will get mushrooms from the log for 5 years.
Right conditions for mushrooms
- Temperature above 40 degrees in the day time.
- Humid conditions.
- Not too much light.
