To identify pests in your garden you should know what pests actually are. By definition pests are organisms or creatures judged as threat to your garden. They either destroy the plant or leave it diseased and unproductive. They injure, irritate and damage the plant. This article gives the best ways to identify pests in your garden.
Best Ways of identifying Garden Pests
It is untrue that all insects in your garden are pests. Some of them are helpful to your garden and they help by eating what are actual pests. For example ladybugs, lacewings and predator wasps eat away aphids and destructive caterpillars.
- First of all you have to observe the leaves of the plant. If the leaves are eaten away to large extent then there can be caterpillar sitting very near to the next leaf. Caterpillars are voracious eaters of leaves and stalks and if unattended they can eat away the whole plant in a day or two and even whole garden in few days. They are large and thus visible. Some of the caterpillars are grasshopper, corn earworm, cabbageworm, and the ever-destructive tomato hornworm.
- Once you observe that the roots of plant are loosened and plant foliage is eaten away then you can know that your plant is attacked by beetles. A few to name are Japanese beetle, Colorado potato beetle, sweet potato weevil, and corn rootworm. They are one the most destructive pests as they attack directly the root. The plant needs immediate attention otherwise the garden is damaged within no time.
- Other below-ground-pests that can damage your garden are the earwig, cutworm, snails, slugs, and fire ants. These garden pests feed at the root system of a plant and where the plant meets the ground. They can destroy tomato, pepper, and bean plants by literally eating through the plant stalk just at ground level.
- If you find that your plant is rotted, weak and unproductive and could not find big insects near it, then it might have got infested by small pests such as mite, leafminer, thrip, aphid, and mealybug. They can be seen only if closely examined. Observe the underside of plant leaves close to the stem and stalk.
Thus before using pesticides and insecticides identify pests correctly. You can find guidance to identify from an expert from your local nursery.
