If you are a water-conscious person or you want to avoid the trouble of watering your garden, then you might want to consider fitting a drip irrigation system to your garden.
A drip irrigation system, if installed properly, has an efficiency of over 90%, i.e. more than 90% of the water is used up by the plants, with less than 10% waste. Sprinklers have an efficiency of 50 – 70% and watering with a hose wastes much more water.
A drip irrigation system is convenient and saves time. If you attach an automatic timer and controller to the system, your garden will be watered without your physical presence!
Drip irrigation systems can easily irrigate even an irregular landscape, which would otherwise be difficult. These days, drip irrigation equipment is easily available and you can install one by yourself.
A drip irrigation system consists of the following components
- Pump or pressurized water source
- Water Filter(s) – Filtration Systems: Sand Separator like Hydro-Cyclone, Screen Filter, Media Filters
- Fertigation Systems (Venturi injector) and Chemigation Equipment (optional)
- Backwash Controller
- Main Line (large Pipe and Pipe Fittings)
- Hand-operated, electronic, or hydraulic Control Valves and Safety Valves
- Smaller diameter polytube or laterals
- Poly fittings and Accessories (to make connections)
- Emitting Devices at plants (Emitter or Drippers, micro spray heads, inline drippers, trickle rings)
- Automatic timer and controller (optional)
Planning a drip irrigation garden
You need to plan properly if you want the drip irrigation system to work well.
- Have plants of the same type and similar water needs in the same area. This will make it easy for you to install the laterals.
- Consider installing a drip irrigation system in a small part of your garden, as a test. If you like the results, you can extend the system to the remaining parts.
- Evaluate the landscape of your garden. Are some points in it at a higher altitude than others? If yes, you need to make arrangements for adjusting pressure at different points.
Drip irrigation has some disadvantages also, but its advantages far outweigh its disadvantages and it will prove really worthwhile to install a system in your garden.
