Everyone desire to have lawns in front of their house. But to maintain a good lawn is a costly affair. There are many lawn alternatives which are cost effective and provide the same satisfaction as that of original one. Few of them are:
- Ground Cover: Ground cover comprises of those plants which cover ground but do not grow tall. So, they do not require cutting and reduce maintenance cost. Ground covers are usually chosen on their density to spread and control weeds growing there. Varieties of ground covers are available like flowering groundcovers, nitrogen fixing ground covers etc. Ground covers are normally perennials or evergreen but those which are evergreen are more beneficial.
- Clover: Clover planted because it is a ‘soil conditioner’. Clover is a nitrogen fixing plant hence it enriches soil with natural fertilizers. Plants can grow easily and quickly in it. Clover also chokes the growing weeds in soil. The importance of using clover as an alternative is that it is cost effective as it require little to no water, no fertilizer and it is easy to move on or play over it.
- Ornamental Grass: one of the alternatives could be to convert lawn into ornamental grass. Ornamental grasses are cost effective and can grow easy in variety of soils. They do not require fertilizers and are drought resistant also. They do not have much problem of pest and diseases.
- Flower And Shrub Beds: These are used normally to add color and variety while preparing a cast effective and low maintenance lawn. They could be effectively used on slope and other areas which are difficult to mow. Beds of shade loving- varieties can be planted trees with low hanging branches and protruding roots which cause mowing problems.
Thus, by following any of the above measures maintenance of lawn can be reduced with out reducing its beauty.
