With plenty of flowers and harvest, August is considered to be the best time to spend in your garden. Besides enjoying pleasant evening in your garden there are certain gardening tasks you need to do in the month of August. Some of the gardening tasks are listed below:
- In case you have gaps in your garden and are looking to fill them then this is the perfect time to collect spring bulbs. You can plant these spring bulbs next month.
- You can plan for Christmas garden from now. You can plant flowers like Hyacinth, mini daffodils, freesias, etc. By Christmas they will blossom.
- This is the perfect time to collect seeds of your favorite plants. Collect the seeds and store them in dry brown paper bags.
- You can continue your summer cutting of pelargonium, tender perennials and fuchsias.
- You can propagate plants like African violets and coleus through cutting.
- Keep your lawn clean and clear all the plant debris and dried foliage.
- Look for pest and other insect infestation and pre-treat your garden to prevent it from the damage caused by them.
- This is perfect time to prune your rambling and climbing roses.
- Even if it rains outside it is seen that containers tend to become dry. It is advisable to water them properly and you can even soak containers for 2-3 hours.
- Cut everlasting flowers like achillea and helichrysum and hang them upside down and allow them to dry. After complete drying these flowers are ready to serve as dried decoration.
- For you kitchen garden this is excellent time to sow oriental vegetables like Chinese cabbage, kohl rabi, winter spinach, spring cabbage, sorrel, fennel, over wintering onions, etc.
- You need to harvest fast maturing vegetable like runner beans, French beans, tomatoes, cucumbers and courgettes. This would avoid toughness or stringiness and also enhance the chances of further cropping.
- In case you have cleared old crops then it is better to cover the bare land with plastic. Before covering bare land with soil it is better to add manure as this will improve the soil quality. This would inhibit the growth of unwanted weeds.
- You can utilize this month cutting side shoots and supporting the weak shoots of plants like tomatoes.
- Harvest the last yield of raspberries and prune the plant almost to soil level.
- In this season your potatoes are more susceptible to potato blight hence make sure that you spray your crop with fungicide. Also water your potato crop properly as this will encourage high production.
- In case you have water garden then with the help of rake or net remove duckweed and blanket weed. You can pile the weed at the side of the pond. Add compost heap in the pond.
- To regulate algal growth you need to clean all the debris and fallen leave regularly.
- The sunken water levels of your pond garden can be leveled during this period.
- During hot and sticky weather it is advisable to leave your fountains on as this will aerate your pond properly.
