With the onset of fall generally the population of garden and lawn pests reduces considerably. Still you might come across garden pests which can thrive well in low temperatures of fall. You can call these pests as “Fall Garden Pests”. This article includes all the information about fall garden pests.
The best part of fall garden pests is that the period to cause damage to your garden is short as the freezing temperatures will kill them. So when compared to summer garden pests, fall garden pests causes less damage to your fall garden. Grub Worms:
Grub worms basically can cause damage in all seasons. These worms like fall season and it is observed that their consumption is more in fall and spring months. This fall garden pest does not cause much damage during fall season as compared to spring season. Climatic zones with above freezing point in the month of November are of major concern.
Grub worms can easily survive throughout winters and in spring season they turn into adult beetles. In the spring months these worms repeat their lifecycle and hence can cause damage throughout the year. The eggs of grub worm hatch in late summer and they start feeding on fall garden and lawn roots. This feeding result in dead patches of grass or easily removable grass as its roots is missing.
To control the havoc of grub worms you need to apply grub worm control during mid or late summer. Make sure that it contains active ingredient called imidacloprid. This compound kills the grub worm larvae before hatching in late summer. In this way it checks the life cycle from completing.
Fall Army Worms:
The best part of fall garden is the colorful foliage and this fall army worm loves to feed on foliage during fall season. As per their names these worms cause damage very rapidly. You will first notice them in the month of September and stick to your garden foliage till the first big frost.
The major problem associated with this fall garden pest is that they usually feed during night. So you can identify the damage caused by the pest during morning only, you will observe chewed edges of leaves. The best point of fall army worms is that they are easy to spot. Fall army worm is a large dark brown or tan colored worm with red or brown colored large stripes on each side.
Fall army worms causes major damage to the cornfields during the early months of fall. To control the damage caused by these worms usually you need to give your garden a pretreatment of pesticides. Make sure that your garden is pretreated during late July or early August as this control the damage caused in the month of September.
Sod Web Worms:
These fall garden pests are similar to grub worms as even they have long lifecycle. Usually it is observed that they infest your garden in the form of adult moths rather than beetles. These adult moths start laying eggs during spring season. The major difference between grub worm and sod web worm is that the eggs of web worm hatch quickly.
These web worms are very small and usually their infestation goes unnoticed till the cocoon appears. In the late summers adult moths appear from the cocoon and reproduce more destructive generation. You need to go for microbial preventive sod web worm pesticides to regulate its damage.
Lastly to prevent your fall garden from the destruction of fall garden pests you need to regularly clean plant debris from the garden. Make sure that you remove all the dead leaves, mulch and grass clippings. This is the best preventive measure to avoid damage from fall garden pests.
