A beautiful, colourful garden is what every person who loves his home and plants dreams of. To see plants in the pink of their health, you give them sunshine, remove dead parts, feed manure and of course, water. Here, read about how to water the plants in your garden, as this important element in gardening goes a long way in making or marring your garden.

How much water do plants need?
This depends on weather conditions, soil composition and the plants themselves. A good drenching once or twice a week is better for your lawn than daily light sprinklings. Deep watering produces strong, deep root systems that can safely withstand drought. Also, coarse, sandy soil has large air spaces that quickly fill with water, but also lose water quickly to the subsoil requiring shorter more frequent watering. Heavier clay or silt soil has numerous smaller spaces that absorb water slowly but hold more water than sandy soil. Clay soil should be watered slowly but less frequently.

When is the best time to water plants?
In dry areas, a regular watering of at least once a week or more is important (skipping days when it has rained heavily). During the more moderate spring and fall or in cooler wetter regions, look for signs that watering is needed.

Early morning is best because water pressure is high, it is still cool so evaporation is low and seepage into the soil is best before the sun bakes the ground hard. Late afternoon is the next best time Night watering is not recommended because the plants stay wet for a longer time promoting lawn diseases.

How to water plants?
Provide an inch of water a week for many plants and lawn grasses. The idea is to keep the soil lightly moist and to prevent it from drying out completely, which would be damaging to most plants.
