Crotons are bushy, tree-like plants. They are shrubs with fleshy leather-like leaves. The leaves start out green but change colours as they mature. The tones of the leaves are numerous and depending on the variety they can be yellow to orange or red. Many different colours exist on the same plant, a characteristic that makes crotons unique plants. Croton plants can live long lives and grow to be quite tall as houseplants.
Caring for a croton might not be as easy as you imagine since they require constant, high-quality care from you. Here are a few things that you need to keep in mind or look for in crotons to determine their health:
Optimum temperature: Crotons cannot stand either too high or too low temperatures (the ideal temperature is around 20 degrees Celsius). So, make sure to avoid fluctuations of temperature and keep the pots away from drafts. However, different varieties have differing light requirements. Some crotons thrive in full sun, while others do best in semi-shade to full shade. In general, the more sunlight received by the foliage, the brighter the colours will be. If the temperature has ups and downs you will see leaves, in different parts of the plant, drop. Generally, if the temperature is too low your plant may drop all of its leaves in no time.
Give them sunshine: Give crotons several hours of bright, direct sunlight per day. The more light the plant receives, the more colorful the leaves will be. Grown in inadequate light, the leaves will be mostly green with yellow veins. Leaves may also fall off in low light.
Watch out for humidity: If you notice lower leaves dropping, or if the leaves colors are dull and you also get brown tips, it is possible that your plant needs more humidity. Provide humidity by spraying the leaves with lukewarm water as often as you can. Place the plant on a tray of pebbles to give it the little humidity boost it needs. Water will be absorbed by the pebbles and create humidity as it evaporates.
