If you’re garden has become a breeding place for worms and you are fed up with the growing heap of worm casts, which are every gardener’s nightmare. Then here are some tips which will help you deal with these problems.
- Avoid leaving leaves on the surface during the autumn and winter. This organic matter proves to be an ideal condition for the growth of worms.
- Do not allow a build up of dead turf grass tissue as again this decaying matter is digested by the worm which leads to casting deposits.
- Always keep the grass at a reasonable height.
- Do not water the plants unnecessary. This excess watering will attract more worms.
- Check the lawn regularly. Inspect your lawn regularly. This will make it easier for you to detect pests and other problems easily.
- You need to identify the pest to look up its life cycle. This will help you decide if and when to apply treatments and how to prevent further problems.
- Before moving on to herbicides, improve the general condition of your lawn by aerating, over seeding and occasionally weeding by hand.
If the lawn is out of condition and pesticides are the only resort then keep these factors in mind.
- Identify the pest correctly
- Purchase only the quantity of product needed for the treatment.
- Use spot treatments rather than broadcast applications.
- Correct timing of pesticide applications will depend on the susceptible life stage of the pest and environmental conditions.
Keep an eye on the pest problem and get more information if necessary before deciding whether or not a treatment is needed and, if so, how and when to apply it.
