Most of us concentrate more on the flora aspect of our gardens and complete ignore the fauna. I say, a garden is incomplete without fauna. Having Butterfly garden you can see life thriving in your beautiful garden and the fact that there are others who appreciate the beauty of your garden is a rewarding experience.
You should see your garden as a breeding ground for butterflies. Your garden should help the butterfly evolve through the four stages of its life cycle- egg, larva, pupa and finally the adult.
All you need to do is to plant flowers that will attract butterflies. You will have to plant to types of plants – host plants and nectar plants. Nectar plants will attract butterflies to your garden and give them a chance to multiply and lay eggs on host plants. Host plants are the source of food for the larvae.
Among Nectar plants you can have in your garden – Cherry tree, Ageratum, Birch tree, Butterfly bush, sunflower, Petunia, Lilac, Cosmos, Snapdragon, Russian Olive, Lilac, Viburnum, Salvia etc.
Milkweed, Daisy, Dill, Oak Trees, Thistle, Queen Anne’s lace, Lamb Quarters, Elm tree, Hollyhock and Plum make good Host plants.
Just close your eyes and imagine what a piece of heaven your garden will look like with colorful butterflies fluttering around fragrant blooming flowers. Seems worth all the hard work, doesn’t it?
