November is a lovely time to grow fruits. A few tips in mind would certainly help you through this great gardening month.
- If you wish to buy an attractive fruit tree this November, make sure you check its size, susceptibility to insects and disease and need for pollination.
- When your ground freezes you can mulch in small delicious strawberries and cover them with one inch of leaves or straw. To keep the mulch in place you can lay some small branches over the leaves or straw.
- Check the trunks of your fruit trees for weeds. Remove all traces of weeds and grass from your tree trunks to prevent the damage by rodents and mice.
- You can also try leaving a bare one foot wide circle around the tree trunks while you spread the mulch. This will prevent the rodents and mice to feed on your tree bark.
- Check your fruit trees regularly. Remove all decayed fruits from the trees and among those that fall on the ground.
- Get rid of all the rake and dropped leaves of plants like cherries and apples.
- If you have shrubs and perennials , check if there is crust around the surface of your sawdust mulch. If there is crust, break it down so that your plants have an increased absorption of water from the fall rains.
- The first week of November is the best time to plant your fruit trees. But make sure you keep mulching the soil regularly thereafter.
