Do you want to grow vegetables in your apartment and enjoy homegrown, fresh and nutritious vegetable? You can try growing vegetables in containers so as to enjoy vegetable gardening in your apartment.
Here are the tips that will guide you to make your own vegetable container garden.
- Crop Selection: Vegetables that can grow in backyard garden can also be grown in a container. Vegetables best suited for containers are lettuce, beans, tomatoes, eggplant, green onions, radishes, parsley and pepper. Selection of variety is very important.
- Soil: Best suited soil for growing vegetables in containers is synthetic soil. Make sure that the soil holds moisture and is rich in nutrients. Check that the soil is free from weed seeds and is disease free. You can use prepared soil from the nursery.
- Containers: You can use any type of containers for vegetable gardening. You can be innovative with drums, tubs, wooden boxes, gallon cans or bushel baskets. Container size may vary according to your availability of space and crop selection. Add 1 inch thick layer of coarse gravel at the bottom of your container to ensure proper drainage of water.
- Transplanting and Seeding: Vegetables which can be easily transplanted are suitable for container gardening. You can either grow vegetable transplants at home or you can buy them from any local nursery. Make sure that you do transplanting carefully to evade injury to the tender roots. If you are using vegetable seed then sow the seed at least ½ inch deep in the soil.
- Fertilization: The best and easiest way to fertilize your container vegetables is to prepare nutrient solution and pour it to the soil mixture. If you are using transplants then it is advisable to start watering along with nutrient solution from the day you transplant. You can start fertilizing your seeds after plants have emerged from them. For a successful container vegetable gardening adequate watering is essential.
- Light: Almost every vegetable plant grows better in sunlight. Try to position your containers such that your vegetables can get suitable growth conditions.
- Insects and diseases: Your vegetable container garden can be attacked by insects and diseases which are common to any backyard vegetable garden. So your plants need occasional inspection. You can use insecticides and fungicides for affected plants.
- Harvesting: You can enjoy harvesting when your vegetables are fully matured.
