You can do container gardening for herbs or medicinal plants all the year through. It is as simple as growing herbs in the garden. It is necessary to maintain same conditions for both outdoor and indoor herb gardening. Here are some tips that will make your indoor container herb gardening more easier:
- Herb gardening needs proper sunlight, soil that’s not rich but should be well drained.
- Choose a west or south side of your apartment. Light requirements for various herbs are different but, generally need more sunlight.
- In winter season you can use fluorescent lamps or growth lamps to supplement natural light.
- Prepare soil by mixing two parts of uncontaminated soil with one part of sand. To maintain soil sweetness, it is advised to add 1 teaspoon of lime for a 5 inch container.
- At the bottom of the container add an inch thick gravel layers this will ensure proper water drainage.
- Proper watering is needed for herbs. Make sure that you are not drenching the herbs. Pour enough water to keep the herbs in a humid condition.
- Keeping this fact in mind that herb plants require sun in the summer season, so place the containers accordingly.
- To avoid plant damage, it is better to bring them indoors before onset of winters.
It is easy to maintain an indoor container herb garden for an indefinite period if you provide proper lighting feeds to the plants. For best results from your container herb garden you also need to repot the plants once in a year, occasional pruning, seasonal outdoor moves and annual renewing.
