Organic gardening is a form of gardening in which the gardener prefers to use only natural products like leaves, manure, grass, etc. to maintain plants. The gardener does not use artificial or modern techniques and products as these may pollute and harm the environment. Organic gardening works in collaboration with nature and promotes healthy growth of the plants and tries to maintain the natural balance.
Tips to build an Organic Garden:
- Plan your garden, landscaping, types of plants, etc cautiously.
- Start recycling the garden wastes as it will act as manure.
- Mulching offers your garden different benefits as it retains moisture of the soil, normalizes soil temperature, controls weeds and prevents plants from acute weather conditions.
- Add organic matter like dead or living plant material and animal waste to your soil to improve it. It looses the soil allowing better drainage and root penetration. It enhances the water retention property and enriches the soil nutrients.
- Organic material can be added to your soil by digging and tilling few inches of soil.
- However, the organic matter gradually decomposes and gets converted into humus. Humus is rich in simpler nutrients which are easily absorbed by the plants.
- Add about an inch of fine textured organic compost to your soil every year in order to retain 5 to 6% of the soil organic matter.
- Don’t add too much of the organic waste as it may over stimulate the growth of the micro-organisms and they will consume all the nitrogen and other essential nutrients making your soil deficient.
- You can also opt for various organic mineral supplements to correct your soil imbalance and to maintain its pH. But, again don’t over use them as they may damage your plants.
