The term Guerrilla means an association of irregular, untrained fighters. So Guerrilla Gardening could be defined as Gardening done by citizens in public spaces. It could be done with or without taking permission of the local authorities. It’s an effort towards beautifying your community, roadside areas, vacant plots, unused railway land and public squares. The concept of Guerrilla Gardening was first introduced by Liz Christy and her group known as Green Guerrilla in 1973 in Bowery Houston of New York. These Green Guerrillas started the Guerrilla Gardening Movement in the New York City.
Community Gardening and Roadside Gardening slightly differs from the concept of Guerrilla Gardening. Community gardening and roadside gardening are done under the supervision of some group or association or the local authority. Where as in case of Guerrilla Gardening individual work under no supervision and without any personal interests.
Guerrilla Gardening is a kind of graffiti where instead of spray paint cans, plants are being used. It is a voluntary action converting vacant lands into community gardens. The concept is more about concern towards your surroundings and the determination with which you want to modify them. It just needs the creativity, gardening tools, vacant plot in your area, more volunteers and resources in order to maintain your garden.
With so much of pollution increasing in the city, Guerrilla Gardens would help in pollution control. As there would be more plantation along the roadsides, vacant plots and foot-paths so more absorption of carbon dioxide. At the same time these garden can also serve the purpose of fresh and healthy food.
