Water your Container Plants Correctly

Watering your container plants correctly is very important. Often Houseplants tend to die from improper watering over all other factors. Here are some tips that may come handy to you while you water your potted houseplants.

  1. Water your plants according to the weather. We often tend of over water or under water our plants. If you base your watering on the weather it will help you water your plants adequately. At temperatures lower than 70 F, the weather is cool and the moisture evaporation is low. It would be sufficient your outdoor potted plants once or twice every week so that it keeps the soil from drying and maintain the moisture. At temperatures higher than 70 F you would have to water your plants two to three times a week depending on the type of your soil.
  2. Examine the type of soil in your plants. Often potted plants are based in dense soils that are not really good for indoor plants. Types of potting soils used can affect watering. Some soils mostly comprise of bog peat so it makes us very likely to over-water our plants. Its better to chose potting soil that is lighter and drains better. Make sure it has sufficient amount of bark chips or shaghnum peat and some amount of perlite too. These materials help improve the soils drainage.
  3. Use Clay Pots. Clay pots are the best for your container plants. Clay is a porous material and it allows excess water and moisture to seep out through the sides of the pot.
  4. Use a moisture meter. If you are still unsure about watering your plants adequately, you can help yourself with the moisture meter. It is easily available at most garden tool shops. It helps you test the soil moisture and signals you if your plant needs more or less moisture.

    Nice message with some good tips. However, let me invite people to set up some experiments with plastic bottles. These “containers” can easily be transformed into “self-watering” systems by using the bottom of a bottle as a small water tank in which the inverted top part (more or less 2/3 of the bottle) is absorbing the water gradually through one or two small perforations in the lid or bottle neck.
