- At the nursery, take a look at the general health and condition of plants there. If you are convinced, proceed further or find another nursery to purchase your plants.
- Decide on the plants you wish to buy.
- Once you have decided, chose about a few of the healthiest looking plants and set them aside. Then go back to them for a closer examination. A closer examination of all the parts of the plant would certainly help you pick the best plant for your garden.
What to look for
- Look for signs of any disease and insect pests.
- Prefer a short bushy plant to a tall spindly plant. A short bushy plant is always easier to transplant and is often more likely to grow up into a nice specimen.
Root
- Ask the nurseryman to remove the plant from the pot for a close examination.
- Make sure it is not too compacted and choking out of the pot or the surface of the soil.
- Check the drainage holes in the pot. A few small branches of the root would have begun to come out through the holes. Touch them for any signs of dryness or brittleness. A good root system is never dry or brittle.
Stem/Trunk
- A good stem/trunk is like a backbone of your plant that gives it good shape and fullness.
- The main stem should be thick and appear healthy.
- Look for any signs of abrasions, breaks or other damage that might be slowly killing the plant.
Leaves
- Make sure the foliage is clean and shows no sighs of wilting
- Leave should have a strong and healthy appearance.
- Also notice the color of the foliage. It should be bright.
- Check for spotting, leaf edge burn or signs of other common plant problems.
Buds
- If you are purchasing flowering plants purchase those with young tight buds.
- If you purchase a fully flowered plant, you would be able to see the plant in full bloom until sometime.
