A garden without a lawn may look like a doll without hair… at least I feel so. A gardener loves to caress his garden mowing and trimming the lush green grass like a little girl who loves to comb and make her dolls hair.
So before we jump on to discuss what kind of grasses you should be using, there are a few questions that you need to ask yourself. Based on this and the climatic conditions you live in we’ll see which type of grass suits your lawn best.
Ready?
Question 1: What kind of a lawn do you want to have in your garden? Do you prefer a superb lawn that looks like a golf course or an average lawn that resembles the one in your near by park or are you looking forward to anything that gives your garden greenery?
Question 2: How much money, effort and time are you willing to devote to your garden? Depending on the kind of lawn you want to have, you would have to shell in a good deal of money, effort and time on the maintenance of your lawn. Do you want a lawn that requires Low Maintenance, Medium or High Maintenance?
Question 3: In your garden, would any factors limit the choice of the grass that you want to plant? Will factors like soil type, its pH balance, slope and lawn area determine what kind of grass you ought to chose for your lawn? What do you think is the problem area of your lawn?
Question 4: What texture do you want your lawn to have? Do you want your grass to have narrow blades that give a fine texture or do you want your grass to have wide blades that give a coarse texture?
Question 5: Does your climate support Perennial grasses or do you have to stick to Annual grasses? Perennial grasses that can live for years or Annual grasses that last only for one season?
You can answer all these questions for your convenience and watch this space for more information. Tomorrow I will tell you which grass is best suitable for your lawn.

Hi, We have small lawn of 200 sft in front of our house in Gurgaon. As our house is North facing, we don’t get direct Sunlight onto the lawn except for few months (Mar to Sept). We are very keen to have a very good lawn ideally as green as a golf course (Unless it’s way beyond our budget of say Rs. 250-300 a month). I am not sure whether it would be sufficient ! Ready to spend any amount of time. Medium to high maintenance is okay with us. The probelm what we face : We tried out ‘Carpet grass’ twice or thrice. It did not last more than 3-4 months…we guess it’s because of lack of direct Sunlight. We used Fertilisers aswell..but no improvement. Shall be gratefull if you could help us on this…
